Lyon, France’s third-largest city, is the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region located in east-central France. The metropolitan region has a population of about 1.5 million. Lyon is a major center for banking as well as for chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries. It is recognized as both a cultural center and one of the best places in France to do business. The city contains a significant software industry with a particular focus on video games, and in recent years has fostered a growing local start-up sector. Tourism remains a major industry.

Vincent Michelot

Vincent Michelot is a professor of American Politics at Sciences Po Lyon where he is also the vice-president for International Relations. He is a specialist of US institutions and elections, but also of comparative politics. The author of three monographies on the US presidency, he recently published with Gallimard a political biography of John Fitzgerald Kennedy and co-edited a volume on Barack Obama’s first term. A member of the board of the Fulbright Committee and of Institut des Amériques, he frequently works with the German Marshall Fund of the United States on issues of transatlantic dialogue and collaboration.
